After I learned Reiki, I also attended a series of classes in Healing Touch which rose up in the nursing field after Therapeutic Touch. All of these touch therapies are based on the same energy that is available to all of us. Here is a quote from a book called Megatrends 2010 that indicates that healing by laying-on of hands is going to be part of a patient’s medical treatment now and in the future:
"Back in the 1970’s, registered nurses began experimenting with a spiritual energy technique called Therapeutic Touch, which involves scanning a person’s body. “Therapeutic Touch has been derived from the ancient practice of laying-on of hands,” writes Janet Macrae, Ph.D., R.N., in Therapeutic Touch: A Practical Guide (Knopf, 1996).
Many R.N.s felt sure the treatment helped people, but there was no proof. Then in 1975 one trailblazer, Dolores Krieger, Ph.D., R.N., who with her colleague Dora Kunz pioneered the modern practice, submitted Therapeutic Touch to scientific protocols and published the findings in the American Journal of Nursing. Patients who received Therapeutic Touch, she discovered, showed “significantly greater increases in mean hemoglobin” levels than a control group who received routine nursing care.
The experiment was a “milestone in the development of Therapeutic Touch into a recognized clinical method,” writes Janet Macrae. For decades now nurses have routinely studied Therapeutic Touch in nursing schools and healing centers and the practice is widespread. Therapeutic Touch has helped heal indigestion, headaches, high blood pressure, ulcers, wounds, infections, and burns, says Macrae.
Today, as we witness the dawn of an era that will mark the wholesale importation of scores of spiritual approaches into business, medicine will serve as the bellweather. Why? Because it has already subjected the most common spiritual “technique” imaginable to rigorous scientific study."
